Russia and China also Oppose Darfur Report
Russia and China joined the Arab world , calling on the UN human rights watchdog, The UN Human Rights Council to disregard the findings of the Nobel Prize laureate Jody Williams lead mission to the Darfur region. The Arab-Moslem block and Russia and China said that since the mission failed to reach the conflict region, there findings could not be held credible.
Sudan initially agreed to the mission but later refused to cooperate with it because one of its members was dubbed not objective, after he was reported as saying that the situation in Darfur was a genocide. The mission was forced to work out of neighboring Chad and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia`s capitol. According to the report over 200 thousand civilians have found there deaths due to the conflict in addition to 2 million refugees forced to flee for there lives. The report puts the blame for most of the crimes on the Arab militias that began a government supported uprising four years ago, but that the Sudanese government failed to protect its citizens and is therefore largely responsible. The Sudanese government distanced itself from the Arab militias saying they aren?t responsible for there actions.
The West is worried that if the Darfur report will be disregarded, the newly formed UN Human Council will be doomed ineffective to deal with future violations. Though Williams urged the Council to accept the mission findings and recommendations, saying: "Innocent civilians continue to suffer and die. They do not need more reports. They are pleading for protection." Russia, China and the Arab World are standing behind Sudan`s Justice Minister Mohamed Ali Elmardi claim that the report "has no legal standing. This faulty report should not be discussed."
