Violence Erupts on Copenhagen Streets

Denmark`s capitol, Copenhagen, usually a peaceful place, didn`t seem that way during the weekend it looked more like a battle field. 400 people were arrested, 180 of them on Saturday during a violent riot, during which serious damage was inflicted on cars and buildings. The reason for the riots was the city`s decision to transform a popular entertainment center into a religious center. The center is known to be a focal point of anarchist, punk and radical leftist activists.

The spark that started the weekend fire was the decision to evict a building that was used for music concerts in downtown Copenhagen. The building will be used by the Christian community in the city. Three days ago police officers stormed the building, after the occupants refused, even after the court decided they were illegally there, to leave. According to the trespassers, the city was not allowed to sell the building and therefore the decision was invalid. In addition they demanded an alternate building, until the inquiry they demanded finishes.
