Colorado Avalanche Buries Cars on US 40
An avalanche buried a number of cars in highway in Colorado State, Saturday night. Officials reported that other vehicles where flipped over on the side of the road. Emergency services have managed to find and rescue at least 7 survivors. It is still unclear how many people were hurt, at this time.
Stacey Stegman, a spokesperson for the Colorado Department of Transportation said: "Our crews said it was the largest they have ever seen. It took three paths," She added that the massive slide took place on the U.S. 40 near the 11,307-foot Berthoud Pass, nearly 96 Kilometers west of Denver on the way to the Winter Park Resort, one of Colorado`s largest ski resorts. Ms. Stegman noted that the avalanche took place at a relatively late hour, so that there were little cars on the road at the time the avalanche took place. "Good thing it didn`t happen a couple of hours earlier," said Darcy Morse, a Winter Park spokeswoman.
Colorado has been plagued with heavy storms over the weekend. The Denver area was covered by about 20 Centimeters of snow. This has been the third major storm in the same number of weeks. Mile Cikara, who was on his way to Winter Park, told reporters that he had helped in the saving of avalanche victims: "I along with 30 other people grabbed shovels and started digging to get people out. I had a shovel but people were using their hands, skis, ski poles, whatever, to dig out," until rescue teams arrived, he said.
