France`s ruling party`s presidential candidate, Minister of Interior Nicolas Sarkozy, faced scandal, after it was reported that he ordered the police take DNA samples in order to promote the investigation into the theft of one of his son`s moped. Critics of Sarkozy said such through thorough testing is seldom used in such cases. One of Sarkozy`s opponents, Francois Bayrou, said the incident merely brought to light the fact that France`s legal system has is has two modes, one for the poor and another for the rich, a situation he intends to rectify if he becomes President in the up coming elections. "I think events like this take place every day in France but don`t result in such a deployment of police resources," he said.

Sarkozy, who is currently in England for a meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, did not comment on the incident but police spokesman Patrick Hamon said no special treatment was given, Saying the scooter was found by the police, who were searching a basement for stolen goods. Once the moped was found it was checked and it was discovered that it was reported stolen by the Sarkozy`s son and his former wife.

Sarkozy being Minister of Interior affords him command of the state police. Recently Sarkozy was accused of using his power for political gain, after reports that he had sent police officers to spy on one of the advisers of his opponent, the socialist presidential candidate, S?gol?ne Royal. Following this took place, socialist parliament members made inquiries to the country`s Constitutional Council to check whether or not the law allows a presidential candidate to remain in the ministerial position during an election.
