Lebanese Opposition Threatens to Increase Level of Protest
The Lebanese opposition is threatening to increase the intensity of its struggle. A high ranking official said Friday, adding that Hezbollah plans to widen its campaign for the resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora. The official said the the opposition plans to paralyze most of the country. Many protesters have been staying in tents put up in front of the Prime Minister`s office, since the protests against Siniora began over a month ago. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity said: "All political and diplomatic efforts are deadlocked," He added. "There is no option for the opposition but to step up pressure on the authorities, who are proceeding as if there is nothing wrong ...The moves will culminate in a stage where most of the country would be paralyzed."
Several Arab nations have tried to as mediators in the Lebanese crisis. Arab League Secretary-General, Amr Moussa, held talks last month in Syria and Lebanon in an attempt to reach an agreement that would lead to the reduction of tensions between the government and the opposition. Arab sources said the meetings were held under a extremely stressful atmosphere. The settlement offered by Moussa is one that would construct a 3-membered government with 19 of Siniora`s people, 10 Hezbollah ministers and another "neutral" minister, accepted by both sides. In return the government will receive securities from the opposition that it will not disrupt the government`s activities. After which, in February continued national dialog will take place, to determine new election laws.
Last week the Hezbollah lead opposition called for early reelections for parliament, demands which were ignored by the anti-Syrian coalition. In the publication published by the opposition the Hezbollah calls fro a reform in the country`s election laws and a prompt reelection to follow.
