Greek Prosecute Sunken Ship Capitan and Crew

Greek authorities have decided to press charges against crew members of a Greek cruise ship. The crew members, with the ship`s captain among them, are charged with negligence that led to the sinking of the ship in the Aegean Sea. Breaking international maritime rules, the ship is held responsible for the lost of the Cyprus-owned Sea Diamond. The ship was carrying some 1,153 passengers at the time of the event, and two French passengers are still missing. According to CNN, the charges will be upgraded if they are declared dead.

According to international laws, the passengers must be evacuated once a ship is trapped on a reef. However, the captain of the ship admitted on an interview that he tried to free the ship instead of evacuating the passages, the persecution official said. His efforts were futile as the ship`s hull had been ripped by the rocks causing the vessel to sink. The persecution is charging the crew for negligence, as this all tragedy could have been avoided. Although there were no injuries, and the process of evacuating the passengers went with no glitches, there are still two people missing, Jean-Christophe Allain, 45, and his daughter Maud, 16.

As for now, all six crew members have been freed. The persecution did not even ask for a bond to be posted, but if convicted, the officers are facing a maximum sentence for five-year jail time. The Greek are taking the incident highly serious as the cruise-ship season now begins. Usually, the demand for Greek cruises is high, but with this latest tragedy, all bets are off. Hopefully, this will not damage this year`s tourists season.
