Danes Arrest Nine Terror Suspects
Police in Denmark arrested nine men in an immigrant neighborhood this week, men who were suspected of making explosives in preparation for an attack within Denmark. Seven of the men were arraigned on preliminary charges of "planning a terror attack". Two of the nine men were released following the announcement. Imam Abu Bashar of Denmark confirmed to media outlets that the suspects still in custody are Muslims.
Officials in the city of Odense did not say what the alleged terror target was, or how far the plot had progressed. Lars Findsen, the head of the Danish Security Intelligence Service, said the men had amassed enough material "to build explosives in connection with the preparation of a terror act".
Authorities went on high alert in Denmark after Muslims angry with caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad being published in a local newspaper, rioted throughout the country, in Europe, and the Middle East. Danish Justice Minister Lene Espersen said he does not know whether the planned attack was related to the cartoon incident in February, but following their publication Western embassies were attacked by mobs in predominantly Muslim nations.
