The World Wide Web has 100 million Sites!
When the first website appeared in 1989, nobody would have thought that in under 20 years, the internet would expand at such an incredible rate, changing the way we think and act. There is almost nothing in our lives that cannot be done over the internet, whether it?s banking, shopping or even finding a life-partner! Recently, the WWW celebrated a milestone ? there are now 100 million websites reported sites officially operating online.
CERN, Geneva, the European Organization for Nuclear Energy was the home of the first website when the creators sought a way for sharing physics data. By 1995, there were 18,000 registered websites from around the globe and less than a decade later, in 2004, this number had reached an incredible 50 million! If the present growth rate is anything to go by, it won?t be long before we see hundreds of millions of sites.
Most websites today are used for the exchange of information and for commercial purposes. Some people create their own personal sites as a kind of living testimony. Blog sites are also incredibly popular, allowing the average Joe to have his opinions read by anyone interested. Celebrities have sites about their lives and even the Pitt-Jolie clan has created separate websites for all three of its children. From its humble beginnings as an exchange of texts to an incredible element with which we simply could not live without, the World Wide Web continues to grow and expand beyond our wildest imagination.
