Maoists join Nepalese government and end rebellion

An agreement signed between the Nepalese government and Maoists rebel leaders has brought the decade long insurgency to an end. The agreement, signed on Wednesday, calls on the rebels to lock up their weapons, confine their fighters to camps and join an interim government. Rebel leader Prachanda said "We have reached a historic agreement which has drawn a roadmap for a new Nepal." Prime Minister Koirala called the agreement a victory for all of Nepal`s people.

The letters of the agreement have the United Nations supervising the weapons handed in by the rebels until November 21 and a new interim parliament to be set up by December 1. the current prime minister is agreed on the rebels to continue leading the government in the new age.

The insurgency has killed more than 13,000 people in the past decade. Nepalese have supported the insurgency mostly in the far Western provinces and not around the capital Kathmandu. The rebels` demand that all Kathmandu`s residents host 10 Maoists over the weekend and provide them with food, as they visit the city for a mass rally, were received with anger and protest.
