Sadam`s hanging death sentence
Sadam Hussein pleaded his people, the citizens of Iraqu, to find reconciliation, just a few days after hearing of his death sentence. Sadam was tried together with six other people for taking part in a 1980`s military campaign targeting the Kurds, known as the Anfal campaign. That campaign is thought to have caused the death of close to 200,000 Kurds.
Sadam Hussien is waiting for his second trial witch may very well prolong his life as he is already expecting the death penalty. The Iraqi authorities may want to wait until this second trial will be completed. As for now, an appeal was made against the guilty verdict and the outcome will be decided by nine judges. The decision is expected to be made later this year or at the beginning of next year. If the death sentence is upheld, the execution will follow within 30 days of the final decision.
The death sentence was given to Sadam following his taking part in the killing of 148 people of Shia town, Dujail after a failed attempt on assassinating him in 1982. The Shai-led government is eager to see the end of the case with the hanging of Sadam. The Kurdish politicians would like to see their court case regarding the Anfal case to be finished first, thus prolonging Sadam`s life for what is most likely to be yet another death sentence.
