International climate change conference in Kenya
Environmental ministers from different countries around the world join forces in the International climate change conference taking place in the capital of Kenya, Nairobi. This is only the beginning of a two week summit overlooking different objectives and considering measures for reducing harmful greenhouse gases beyond the year 2012 and helping countries adapt to this future climate change.
The Kyoto protocol, from 1997, formed a unified agreement between industrialized countries to reduce the harmful use of gases by an average of 5.2 percent from what it was in 1990, by the year of 2012. The Kenyan summit makes for a second phase to that protocol. It was only last week that the British government released a report warning that failing to act upon the global warming issue could result in very high costs, even trillions to the global economy.
The UN reported on a rising tendency for emission of harmful gases. These reports have a role in raising awareness to this burning issue that can otherwise remain neglected. The Kenyan conference was preceded by The Montreal conference last December, were an agreement was made regarding the road map to extend Kyoto. Some less formal talks were made in Zurich in September, hopefully preparing the ground for greater achievements in this concerning issue.
