Hussein`s Verdict Raises Troubled Reactions
The Sunday`s verdict regarding the former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein raised numerous opposing reactions. Some people protested the verdict on the streets, while others were extremely joyful to hear Saddam`s sentence. However, the reactions varied from happiness to protests. The Interior Ministry had to take some drastic measures, like closing down the two Sunni satellite TV stations that were accused of provoking violence.
In Hussein`s hometown, Tikrit, approximately 2,000 people were expressing their protest against the verdict, therefore resisting the curfew that was imposed by the government. Nevertheless, luckily there were no official repots regarding actual violence and aggression among the public, hence the two TV channels that were forced to stop their broadcast, were partially preventive measures. In addition, a movement restriction was forced on Sunday in several Iraqi regions.
However, the streets of numerous cities in Iraq were also filled with people cheering on Hussein`s sentence and overjoyed with the verdict. Many people were carrying pictures of the famous victims of the Hussein`s regime and were shooting their guns in celebration. Hence, there might be a possibility of some trouble, as a reaction to the long-awaited punishment of the former Iraqi reader. However, the overall reaction of the public provides hope that various complications will not take place and that violence will not emerge.
