Moscow Hampers Gay Rights
Russia comes down hard on gay rights activist while police force deployed against gay rights parade in Moscow. The gay rights parade was to be held in downtown Moscow when a group of nationalist and religious prtestest got into a scuffle.
"We are conducting a peaceful action. We want to show that we have the same rights as other citizens," said Nikolai Alexeyev, the Gay Parade organizer, in an AP report.
1,000 policemen were deployed to the city`s center during the parade. Police also arrested 20 people from religious groups and nationalist groups, who were opposed to the parade. Russia has a long history of human rights violations.
