Judges Shot In Turkish Court
According to the state-run Anatolia news agency, at least five judges have been wounded after an attorney opened fire in Turkey`s top administrative court. The judges were holding a daily meeting in the capital of Ankara when the gunman burst into the court`s second chamber and fired his weapon. Police captured him as he tried to escape.
According to witnesses, the lawyer yelled, "Allahu Akbar (God is great). His anger will be upon you!" At least one of the judges received life-threatening wounds and is in surgery. The court was under widespread criticism for a recent ruling that said public employees and teachers cannot wear headscarves while at work.
A court deputy told reporters the attacker shouted, "I am the soldier of God," and said he was carrying out the attack to protest the court decision on headscarves. Turkey is a Muslim majority country, yet is officially secular in terms of government affairs, with the army often taking charge in the case of efforts to bring religion and government together.
