UN Humanitarian Chief Heads to Sudan

The U.N. humanitarian chief says he is heading to Sudan`s western Darfur region. Jan Egeland is traveling there in an attempt to draw attention to the desperate need for funds to help millions in the troubled region. The conflict between Darfur`s rebels has killed about 180,000 people. About two million have been displaced.

The U.N. undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator was barred from visiting Darfur and Sudan`s capital of Khartoum last month. He`s now been given permission for a three-day visit. He`ll arrive Saturday.

Egeland says the international community needs to focus on the desperate plight of the three million people whose rations are being cut in half because of a shortage of funds. The UN and international community have been slow to act to prevent the mass killings by janjaweed Arab terrorist militias, supported by the government in Khartoum.
