Fatal Tour Bus Crash in Chile
American citizens are among 11 or 12 dead after it was reported a bus carrying tourists from the Celebrity Cruises ship, the Millennium, careened over a mountainside near Arica, Chile. Juan Carlos Poli, an Arica city hall spokesman, says "Rescue crews are working in the area, but we have confirmed 11 people killed, most of them apparently from the United States."
The crash came along a poor section of road near the port city of Arica. According to regional governor Patricia Perez, the crash occurred as the bus was returning to the cruise ship Millennium after visiting Lauca National Park. There were reportedly three surivors, two Americans and one Chilean. This has not yet been verified, and won`t be until families are notified.
Perez added, "We still do not know the exact causes of the accident, but the road in that area has several cliffs and is very curvy." According to reports, the Millennium cruise ship is run by Celebrity Cruises, which is owned by Miami, Florida-based Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. The tour bus which crashed was not associated or run by Royal Caribbean Cruises.
