Midwest Tornadoes Wreak Havoc
Tornadoes in southern Missouri and southern Illinois killed two people whose pickup truck was blown into a propane tank as the twisters flattened homes along a 20-mile path of destruction, officials said. The region was unseasonably warm yesterday with temperatures near 80.
And when that hot air collided with cool, dry air blowing down from Canada, it was a recipe for storms, heavy rain, high winds and hail the size of softballs. Forecasters say there could be more bad weather through Sunday night.
Several others were injured. One twister left a 20-mile path of destruction south of St. Louis. It ripped through two counties before hopping across the Missouri River into Illinois. Several homes and businesses were badly damaged. One of the injured was sprayed in the face with glass.
