E.U. Ministers Appease Muslim Egos

European Union foreign ministers say they regret that satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed offended Muslims, while also condemning the violent response to their publication. A statement from the ministers` says: "The Council of EU member states expresses its deep concern at the events that followed the publication of cartoons in a number of European and other media."

"The Council acknowledges and regrets that these cartoons were considered offensive and distressing by Muslims across the world." According to news reports, the ministers agreed on strategies to rebuilding relations with Muslim nations at a meeting in Brussels. Not all the countries were keen on the conciliatory language used in the statement.

According to diplomats, the Netherlands initially opposed the decision to express "regret." Czech officials were apparently worried that an apology would strike a blow to freedom of the press. However, the minsters say freedom of speech must "come with responsibilities." Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik said after the conferecne the EU will seek dialogue and mutual understanding with Muslim nations. Many have taken this to mean that more appeasement is in store.
