Iran Urged by China to Accept E.U. Offer

China urged Iran this week to accept the broad incentives offered by European negotiators trying to get Iran to give up its nuclear program, including uranium enrichment on Iranian soil. Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said ?The EU-3 (Britain, France and Germany) have come up with a new package regarding the Iran nuclear issue. They have briefed Iran on it, and Iran is looking at it very seriously.?Beijing?s statement added that ?We hope that all sides will come up with a positive response, and will adopt a positive, pragmatic and flexible attitude so we can create conditions favorable for the resumption of negotiations.?

The U.S., the E.U., and U.N. have been trying carrot stick after carrot stick to convince Iran to peacefully give up its nuclear program or submit it to international scrutiny, all but the U.S. and Great Britain rule out the use of force to take out Iran?s various nuclear facilities. Russia, for that matter, has a financial reason to oppose force against Iran as Moscow has been aiding Teheran in building nuclear reactors.

China, along with U.N. Security Council member Russia, opposes the implementation of U.N. sanctions against the Iranian regime should it fail to comply with international demands, effectively throwing a wrench into efforts at the U.N. and, ironically, pulling the teeth from the very demands and incentives that China is urging Iran to comply with. Iran has previously rejected incentive packages, defiantly stating that Iran will in no way whatsoever give up uranium enrichment or any other form of nuclear research.
