Homeland Security Delays Weddings
Many weddings in the United States are facing a delay thanks to the Department of Homeland Security. The delay stems from paperwork that has not been gotten to yet which is preventing at least 10,000 people from getting married or joining their loved ones in the United States. The paperwork was designed to prevent mail-order brides from being abused or worse by suspect American men, but just hasn?t been gotten to yet by the necessary authorities ? who themselves say that much of the paperwork has not been finished.
The delay comes at a sensitive time for immigration procedures, as those who are currently facing their wedding delays went through the process of entering the country legally and are getting the run-around at the same time that discussions abound in the United States over what to do with the millions of illegal immigrants living and working in the country. As those agitating for rights and citizenship for illegal immigrants marched in cities, these thousands of legal migrants could only watch from the sidelines with surely a sense of bewilderment and unfairness. Most mail-order brides to the United States come from Asia or Eastern Europe, and once in the country are often lost in the system or completely missed.
Oftentimes, a mail-order bride will be taken by a man and then abused and sometimes even killed as a result of the abuse. Still, those in the government and those facing the delays must acknowledge that it is better that someone is looking out for their well being instead of ignoring their plight. It must also be said, though, that a number of the delayed being kept out are males waiting for the chance to marry their brides in the States, and that not nearly all of those women facing delays are of the mail-order variety.
