Japan Suffers from Heavy Flooding
As Americans across the United States deal with extreme temperatures, and in the case of Queens, New York, power outages resulting from trying to deal with the extremes, Japan has seen massive flooding that recently claimed three lives on the island of Kyushu, a southern island of the Asian country. All totaled, twenty-one lives have been lost in Japan recently due to the flooding, and in the case of Kyushu, more rain is expected over the next day or two. Japanese Self-Defense Forces units have been called up to aid in rescue efforts in the country.
Over the past month, storms across Asia have resulted in the evacuation of tens of thousands of people from their homes in the region, and landslides triggered by heavy rains have already taken a heavy toll. Whether the weather will let up, and give northeast Asia a reprieve, or continue and further wreak havoc with infrastructure and daily life, remains to be seen. Increased temperatures across the planet could be to blame for sparking stronger weather systems than have been seen in the recent past.
Landslides will often affect the West Coast of the United States, though the densely populated nature of settlement in Asia usually means that landslides in America do not take as many lives as in Asian countries such as Japan. When you add into the equation rains and earthquakes, and Japan?s position vis-?-vis fault lines in the Pacific Ocean, that country and the Korean Peninsula are particularly vulnerable to natural disasters.
