Jury Sees Interview of Mom who Drowned Her Kids

On Tuesday of this week, jurors at Andrea Yates?s second murder trial were shown part of a videotaped interview from 2001 in which Yates talked with a forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Philip Resnick. Yates, 42, was convicted of capital murder in 2002 for drowning her children, but the conviction was overturned by an appeals court that said the jurors may have been influenced by erroneous testimony. Yates told Dr. Resnick that she drowned her five children because, ?they didn`t do things God likes."

Dr. Resnick testified that Yates did not show remorse in the video because she still thought that killing the children was in their best interest due to her psychosis. He said that when he evaluated Yates months later, after she had been taking anti-psychotic medication, she realized she had "needlessly taken her children`s lives...so it was a very different picture."

Dr. Resnick began testifying in the defense`s rebuttal phase after the prosecution rested its case Tuesday. When he asked Andrea Yates how she felt about her children, she said, ?I didn`t hate my children.? When he asked if she loved them, she answered, ?Yes.? However, she qualified that by saying she did not love them ?in the right way?. Yates?s attorneys say that Yates didn`t know that she was doing something wrong when she committed the crime, because she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis.
