Tornadoes Hit Near the Big Apple
Last week saw some crazy weather in the northeastern United States as the country`s National Weather Service said tornadoes had touched down during a severe storm in Westchester County, just north of New York City, and in Connecticut as well. Warnings about the deadly weather conditions were issued just ahead of the evening rush hour. The U.S. northeast has seen some nasty weather as of late, weather that might be due to global warming conditions and an unusually warm spring.
A meteorologist at the National Weather Service said tornadoes were reported to have "touched down in Westchester County and possibly Fairfield County in southern Connecticut. But confirmation of them cannot come until the weather service can assess the damage." Flooding was not reported, but areas of the U.S. northeast have been hit several times in recent months with severe storms and flooding that has cost cities and homeowners millions of dollars.
Winds of nearly 60 mph were reported in the area, while the airports in the New York metropolitan area reported a delay of up to 90 minutes as heavy rain and winds encircled the area. Amid the heavy winds, one building collapsed in Hawthorne, New York, a town located about 30 miles north of New York City, but no serious injuries were reported in that incident.
