Relief and Symptoms of OCD

For those suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder, a mental disease that makes its sufferers perform actions again and again or have disturbing thoughts again and again, is there any relief other than to take certain kinds of pills that reduce the chemical imbalances in the mind that cause obsessive-compulsive disorder, or as it is known in short, ?OCD?? The usual option that mental health professional put forth is for patients to take ?serotonin reuptake inhibitors?, or SRIs, which work to correct the chemical causes of OCD. In truth, though sufferers of OCD might avoid it, is that SRIs are sometimes the best option.

What exactly can be classified as an OCD action or thought? For actions that are indicative of OCD, you can simply watch the Jack Nicholson comedy ?As Good as It Gets?. Nicholson?s character, Melvin Udall, washes his hands repeatedly with several different bars of soap, turns his light switches on and off methodically several times, and checks his door locks several times ? methodically, obsessively. As for OCD thoughts, they can happen any time ? one can take ?serotonin? above, for an example.

The thought that something bad and/or very bad will happen to someone in the future because they misspelled ?serotonin? while typing it out is an example of an OCD thought. An obsessive-compulsive disorder thought isn?t based on proof of any outcome, but is rather an almost paranoia-laced fear response to actions we?ve already committed (which are totally harmless). Those who suffer OCD look like you and me, they just have other issues to sort out. If you know someone who suffers from OCD, be supportive, maybe recommend SRIs, but also keep a lookout for alternative treatments which may prove more beneficial.
