France Celebrates World Cup Game Wins
Wracked by political tensions and civil unrest, France had seemed to have had a pretty bad losing streak as of late. A series of political failures for the government, including the failure of a referendum on a constitution for the European Union, and riots in largely Muslim-populated suburbs, as well a recent youth employment bill which would have taken away from young workers many of the entitlements and protections that French society and workers have long since gotten used to sparked days of riots, had shaken and surprised the country.
Already concerned about waning influence in a world seemingly dominated by ?Anglo-Saxon? policies and ideas, the French Republic has been suffering from a lack of confidence. Then came the World Cup. And not only did the ?coupe du monde? arrive, but it brought with it visions of French victory as the national team ? responsible for winning the World Cup eight years ago, and ageing fast ? won some surprising victories over both Spain and the winners of the last World Cup, Brazil.
No doubt, also bringing smiles to many French faces was the expected early exit of the American national team. Even so, if the French advance further in the World Cup there are still many major issues the country needs to take care of. In the meantime, the French can for the moment wave the ?tricolore?, the French flag, and celebrate a well-deserved momentary release from the tensions of the past months.
