General Pinochet`s Family Indicted

According to a Chile judge`s decision read on state television, General Augusto Pinochet`s wife and four grown children have been indicted and ordered arrested on charges of tax evasion related to the former dictator`s multimillion-dollar accounts at overseas banks.

Pinochet himself has already been indicted on tax evasion charges and his wife and son, Marco Antonio, are charged as accomplices. All those indictments were appealed and rulings are pending. Pinochet also is under indictment but free on bail on human rights charges.

Judge Carlos Cerda set bails ranging from $5,600 to $560 in a decision that is part of an investigation to determine the source of Pinochet`s fortune abroad, officially estimated at $28 million. Also indicted were a lawyer and a secretary for Pinochet and the wife of Marco Antonio, Pinochet`s younger son. According to the judge`s resolution, they all filed false tax returns.
