Israeli PM Breathing, Moves Limbs

Hadassah Hospital officials in Jerusalem, Israel say that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon - being treated for a massive stroke he suffered last week - responded to a pain stimulus Monday by slightly moving his arm and leg. Hadassah director Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef says Mr. Sharon is now breathing on his own but remains in "serious condition" and has not yet opened his eyes. His anesthesia has been reduced as doctors gradually bring him out of a medically induced coma.

Since his second stroke (the first was on December 18, 2005) the 77-year-old former general has undergone three lengthy brain surgeries. Awakening him is a critical step towards evaluating the extent of any brain damage, though medical experts say it is unlikely Sharon will recover enough to be able to lead the country. The Acting Prime Minister is Ehud Olmert, a former mayor of the city of Jerusalem.

Dr. Mor-Yosef said a brain scan performed Sunday showed progress, including a reduction of the fluid in the brain. It is thought that perhaps the medicine the prime minister was taking for his first stroke, combined with the stress of his job, a rare birth defect and his being overweight all contributed to this recent stroke. Since Sharon`s hospitalization, the future of the Middle East peace process has been clouded by doubt and worry for many.
