Beirut Won`t Sleep Quietly
After Israeli jets bombarded a camp south of Beirut belonging to a Palestinian terrorist organzation, Major General Udi Adam, head of the Israeli Army`s northern command, warned that such strikes would continue in the future if the situation didn`t change. The Israeli Air Force bombed the camps in retaliation for rocket attacks launched from southern Lebanon that fell on towns in northern Israel such as Kiryat Shmona. Kiryat Shmona and other towns in the region have in the past been targeted by the Hezbollah terrorist group, which basically controls southern Lebanon.
"The main message that we passed, and we are trying to give, is that the Lebanese government must take responsibility for what happens in its territory," Maj. Gen. Adam said. "If Kiryat Shmona residents don`t sleep quietly, then the residents of Beirut won`t sleep quietly. This is an unequivocal message."
The planes targeted the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), in what was Israel`s deepest strike into Lebanon in 18 months, reports note. Two terrorists were slightly wounded in the attack last Wednesday. Later in the day, Israeli warplanes drew anti-aircraft fire from the Lebanese Army when they flew over the countryside again. Contrary to U.N. demands, Lebanon refuses to send troops to its border with Israel, stating that it will not be "an Israeli protection force".
