Skinny Models Barred from Milan?s Catwalks
In recent years, the fashion industry has come under intense pressure from medical and women?s organizations to change the ultra-skinny image that has pervaded the catwalks, fashion spreads and magazines. From the 1960s, the weight of an average model has steadily dropped to the unhealthy proportions of today. Recent shows have skeletal-like models strutting on the catwalks and the fashion industry has finally been forced to look at where they are willing to draw the line.
The city of Milan ? Italy?s fashion capital - has decided to make the welcome gesture of signing a formal agreement with the powerful fashion industry. The agreement calls for skinny, ultra-thin models to be banned from the February catwalk shows that have become synonymous with Milan. Any model that has a body mass index of less than 18.5 will not be allowed to take part in the shows. Milan hopes that these restrictions will help promote a healthier image in the fashion world.
In addition to banning thin models, the agreement also calls for under-age models to be left at home. Mannequins need to be over 16 years of age if they want to take part in a show. As part of a proactive strategy, the fashion industry will also provide courses on good nutrition and exercise for its models. To counter the idea that trendy clothes can only be worn by thin models, Milan fashion shows will also feature a wide range of clothing sizes.
