France Warns Iran about Upcoming Sanctions

After being at a deadlock over the issue for several months now, France has said that members of the United Nations Security council are very near to deciding on appropriate sanctions against Teheran. Iran has refused to halt its nuclear enrichment program, despite an August 31st deadline set by the United Nations. At present, the six member countries have decided to go ahead with sanctions but still cannot reach a consensus on the types of the sanctions.

The Security Council has within its power to impose non-military sanctions against Iran, including the severance of economic and diplomatic ties and cutting off all transportation and communication links. Some members of the group, including China and Russia, are opposed to severe sanctions. These countries have excellent economic ties with Iran and fear a backlash if they are shown to support harsh steps against the country. On the other hand, Germany and France are pushing for stronger sanctions.

In principle, Russia has conceded to some of the demands and has even, reportedly, made substantial concessions. For example, Russia has agreed to back a clause calling for the freezing of financial assets of Iranians who are linked to the nuclear or ballistic programs. Russia, however, continues to oppose travel bans of so-called problematic Iranians while the United States and Europe support these bans. France?s foreign minister is confident that the group is nearing a decision: "The question is about the scope of sanctions but there will be sanctions,? he stated determinedly.
