Hugo Chavez Reelected as Venezuela`s President
The predictions came true, over 61% of Venezuela`s citizens voted for Hugo Chavez`s reelections. The country`s central election committee announced that Chavez was elected to lead the country for another 6 years, after 78% of the votes were counted. Chavez beat his opponent Manuel Rosales, who received only 38% of the votes. After his victory be was announced, Chavez went out on the balcony of Caracas`s presidential palace and lead the crowd that gathered in the national anthem, despite the heavy rain. He promised his supporters that he will deepen the socialist values in Venezuela`s society and government. Wearing his usual red shirt he called on to the masses below: "Long live the preordained popular victory. Long live the reign of socialism, the future of Venezuela?. Another defeat for the North American empire. Another defeat for the devil. Down with imperialism."
Chavez promised that if he wins this election he will set a committee to reassess the country`s constitution, namely the section that limits the number of terms a president my hold. If this term isn`t changed Chavez will not be able to run for reelection in 2012. Many Venezuelans fear that Chavez will change the law and rule Venezuela indefinitely.
Rosales conceded his loss and addressed the press at his campaign headquarters: "Tonight we have to recognize that they beat us." Rosales is the governor of oil-rich Zulia and was widely supported by the country`s business elite, managed to rally the country`s opposition in his support. His campaign was focused on Chavez`s perceived weaknesses, raving crime and corruption. A week before the elections a mass support rally was held in his favor. Hundreds of thousands of people blocked Caracas`s major roads and what is considered one of the biggest anti-Chavez protests ever held. But despite his efforts Chavez will be Venezuela`s president for at least 6 more years.
