Bangladesh Sentences Islamic Zealot


Earlier in the week, it was reported that American and Bangladeshi officials were meeting on trade issues, but it might also be the case that the American visit was timed to coincide with the sentencing of known Islamic terrorists in the country. The United States have recruited many nations to join the international war on terror, and governments wishing to remain in good stead with Washington that hadn?t previously gone after the known Islamic zealots in their midst got the message after 9/11 that the time to do so was now.

Now reports this week out of Bangladesh have stated that a member of the Islamist group Jamaatul Mujahedin Bangladesh (JMB), was sentenced to a total of 64 years of ?rigorous imprisonment? (RI) after being found guilty of illegally possessing arms and explosives. Enayet Ullah Jewel was found guilty in a speedy tribunal in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka on Monday, and Judge Shahed Nuruddin gave Jewel thirty years ?rigorous imprisonment? for possessing arms, fourteen years ?rigorous imprisonment? for possessing bullets, and twenty years ?rigorous imprisonment? for possessing explosives.

Enayet Ullah Jewel admitted to the illegal possessions in January of this year, and acting on his confession Bangladeshi police recovered seventeen types of arms and ammunition, as well as three kilos of explosives. Judge Shahed Nuruddin says Enayet Ullah Jewel?s sentence will be executed in phases, given its length.
