Israel Again Demands Lebanese Compliance with UN Resolution
For a second straight day on Thursday, the State of Israel demanded that Lebanon comply fully with the recent UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which imposed a cease-fire that ended - more and more it seems temporarily - the war between Israel and the Hizballah terrorist group, based out of southern Lebanon. Jerusalem, along with its ally Washington, have declared time and again that the failure by Beirut to comply with resolution 1559, enacted after Syria ended its occupation in 2005, set the stage for the recently ended war.
A senior Israeli official, speaking about a meeting Israel`s foreign minister was holding with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, said "Israel demands that the Security Council and the Lebanese government deal with the problem created by Hizballah`s declaration." Hizballah has declared that it will not disarm, and Jerusalem has become gripped with the fear that with a Lebanese deal with the group to allow it to retain its arms, Israel will be the only party held to the requirements of resolution 1701.
Israel`s Minister of Health stated "Israel sees the Lebanese government as directly responsible for Hizballah actions, and, as such, the Lebanese government will be held responsible for any violation of the resolution." Israel has warned it will strike at Lebanon`s infrastructure further if Hizballah, by retaining its weapons, is allowed to spark future hostilities with the Jewish state.
