New York Mayors Ponder Presidency

In some countries, being the mayor of a prominent city or the national capital itself is seen as a stepping stone to a higher-level political office. For example, the current prime minister of Israel used to be the mayor of Jerusalem. But in the United States, it may be that two New York City mayors ? one past, and one present ? will throw their hat into the ring in 2008?s race to the White House. As you probably know, New York City is the biggest metropolitan area in the United States, and is the financial capital of the world?s superpower.

Both Michael Bloomberg, the city?s current mayor who has already won re-election, and Rudy Giuliani, New York?s mayor during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, are talked about all over the internet as being potential candidates for the Republican party in 2008. As term limits mean that President Bush cannot run again, and as Vice President Richard Cheney is something of a despised figure at the moment, a new face is seen as vital for many Republican activists.

Rudy Giuliani, often referred to as ?America?s Mayor? due to the example of his leadership during 9/11, was in the running for a Senate seat at one time against First Lady Hillary Clinton before he was forced to bow out due to cancer treatments. Mayor Bloomberg, or ?Mike?, is the founder of the Bloomberg financial group, known mostly these days for Bloomberg financial television and analysis. It is widely expected that another New Yorker, albeit a fairly recent transplant in comparison, will be running for the Democratic nomination to the Presidency in 2008: Senator Hillary Clinton.
