Arrested-Escaped Rape Suspect Recaptured Sunday
Miami-Dade police recaptured rape suspect Carlos Garay after he escaped in a police car last Thursday. Garay, 34, was initially arrested on Thursday, handcuffed and placed in a detective`s car. The car lacked a cage between the back seat and the front seat, and Garay managed to get to the driver`s seat and speed off.
It wasn`t until Sunday when officers caught up with Garay at his parents` home. Miami-Dade Police Commander Linda O`Brien says, "Police officers went tried to apprehend him and Garay went through the ceiling." Garay tried to flee, but was cornered in a shower. O`Brien added, "They ordered him to get on the floor. He refused to do so. They had to Taser him."
During the hunt, police believe Garay`s girlfriend, Giannandrea Gonzalez, 35, and her friend, Lucelena Slyper, 43, helped Garay hide from police. Police have arrested the pair, and are charging them with harboring a fugitive, after they allegedly hid Garay in a warehouse Ms. Slyper rented to raise tropical fish.
