Madrid Bombing Charges Brought

Two years after the deadly morning train bombings that rocked the Spanish capital of Madrid, a Spanish judge has charged 29 people in connection with the terrorist attack. The bombings claimed 191 lives and injured over 2,000 people on March 11, 2004.

An official report concluded that an independent local cell of Islamic fundamentalists that was inspired, but not directed, by al-Qaeda had carried out the attacks, which took place just before decisive elections that brought the Socialists into power.

After a two-year investigation, Judge Juan Del Olmo charged five people with 191 counts of murder and 1,755 attempted murders. The others were charged with collaboration. The trial is expected to go ahead early next year.
