Attack at Prayers for Muhammad`s Birthday
At least 47 people were killed and dozens wounded after a blast rocked the Pakistani city of Karachi on Tuesday. Reports indicated a suicide bomber specifically targeted Sunni Muslims. The blast is believed to have been centered close to a stage where prayer leaders had gathered to celebrate the anniversary of Prophet Mohammed`s birth.
At the time, Pakistani officials said they were still determining the cause of the blast and wouldn`t confirm whether it was a suicide attack or not. "It is too early to say. Maybe it was a suicide attack. Maybe it was a bomb blast. We are investigating," Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Pakistan`s information minister said.
This has been the second major incident in Karachi in the past week. At least 30 women and children were killed and nearly 50 others wounded last Sunday in a stampede at a religious congregation held in the port city to mark the anniversary celebrations of the Prophet Mohammed`s birth.
