Terror Fugitive Surrenders To Yemenis
One of twenty-three al-Qaeda prisoners who escaped from a prison in Yemen a couple of months ago has turned himself into authorities. State-run Saba news agency in Yemen has reported that one "Hazam Saleh Majali" surrendered sometime in the past two days. He was found guilty of participating in an attack on a French tanker in 2002. A court previously sentenced him to death.
One of the terrorists still at large is a man convicted for his role in the 2000 attack on the USS Cole. A reward of $27,800, a fortune in some areas of the Arab world where rural and urban poverty is rife while government-connected citizens benefit from oil wealth, is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the remaining escapees.
Hazam Saleh Majali`s surrender is the sixth among the 23 security prisoners who broke out of prison. The convicts escaped on February 3, 2006, through a tunnel that led them to a mosque and from there to various unknown areas. Authorities are reportedly indirectly negotiating with representatives the remaining fugitives, in an effort to gain their surrender.
