Californian Muslim Convicted Of Supporting Terror
A jury has convicted a California farm worker of supporting terrorists by attending an al-Qaeda training camp in Pakistan. A federal jury found Hamid Hayat, 23, of Lodi, California of one count of providing material support to terrorists and three counts of lying to the FBI when he visited a terrorist camp three years ago.
Hamid`s father, Umer Hayat, 48, was also on trial in a separate case where the jury deadlocked, forcing a mistrial. Both men are U.S. citizens and have been in custody since last June.
No such evidence was found during the nine-week trial. Defense attorneys and prosecutors will meet in court May 5 to decide whether he will be retried. While initially prosecutors and police were worried about the men being involved in a widespread terror network in California.
