Labour Criticized For Cherie`s Hair Expenses
During last year`s month-long general election campaign, the victorious Labour Party of Prime Minister Tony Blair spent a reported $13,700 on hairstyling bills for Mr. Blair`s wife, Cherie. UK newspapers reported that Labour had listed the styling bills for Mrs. Blair as an election expense a $490-a-day, for a month, election expense. The revelation came as part of Labour`s mandatory financial declaration to the UK`s Electoral Commission.
But despite the criticism, a spokesman for Labour dismissed the reports as meaningless cheap shots, saying "So what? She is enormously popular with the party and, don`t forget, we won the election." In the UK and US, it is often the case the candidate`s spouses play a role in helping a campaign - the image of being a family man is often helpful to a male candidate`s electoral prospects.
Cherie Blair has for quite some time now had her hair done by Andre Suard, a stylist at the upscale Michaeljohn salon. The Prime Minister`s wife is often mocked by the British media for her appearance and clothing, and she has been criticized in the past for her reliance on a pricey hairstylist like Andre Suard. Even so, it doesn`t look as if hair will cause the downfall of Her Majesty`s current government.
