Anti-War Activist Arrested During Protest
Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested at an Iraqi war protest outside the White House Monday. Sheehan and several other protesters sat down on the sidewalk after marching along the pedestrian walkway on Pennsylvania Avenue. The group, including Sheehan, was arrested after ignoring repeated warnings by the police. 48-year old Sheehan was the first to be taken into custody.
The demonstration is part of an anti-war effort on Capitol Hill organized by the group United for Peace and Justice. Representatives from anti-war groups are meeting Monday with members of Congress to urge the end of the war and the return of U.S. troops.
Sheehan?s 24-year-old son, Casey, was killed in an ambush in Sadr City, Iraq, last year. She attracted worldwide attention last month with her 26-day vigil outside President Bush?s Texas ranch. Several hundred demonstrators marched around the White House on Monday, stopping in front and singing and chanting "Stop the war now!"
