Africa News Roundup for Monday

Police in Mombasa, fired on opponents of Kenya`s draft constitution, fatally wounding four men, a senior opposition leader and a doctor said. The police action coincided with a visit to the port city by Kenya`s president, Mwai Kibaki. Opponents contend the measure gives the president too much power. The November 21st referendum is Kenya`s first since it gained independence from Britain in 1963.

In Liberia, the party of former soccer star George Weah demanded a rerun of Liberia`s presidential runoff, saying the balloting he had lost was unfair. With 99.3 percent of votes counted, the National Elections Commission gave Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, a Harvard-trained economist, 59.6 percent, putting her on course to become Africa`s first elected female president.

Jacob Zuma, the ousted South African deputy president, was indicted on corruption charges in a case that has split the ruling African National Congress and tested the country`s young democracy. Zuma is accused of trying to solicit a bribe in exchange for protection from a government probe into a weapons deal. His trial was set for next July 31st.
