Fasting for Terrorists in Cuba
American activists started a water-only fast in Cuba Monday, to protest the treatment of suspected terrorists held at the Guantanamo Bay naval base. Members of Witness Against Torture, a largely Christian group, are camped outside a Cuban military checkpoint, about five miles from the U.S. base. They arrived Sunday after marching for five days from the city of Santiago. They are demanding to meet with the inmates.
"We can see the windmills of the U.S. base, we can see some lights off in the distance," Frida Berrigan, 31, said. "We`re not right next door, but we are closer to these prisoners than their family members have been since they were arrested." She failed to mention that many of them were arrested trying to kill American troops.
Berrigan is the daughter of the late Phil Berrigan, a former Roman Catholic priest whose protests against the Vietnam War and nuclear weapons fueled anti-war sentiment. Stacey Byington, a spokeswoman for U.S. Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay, said access to the base is limited to those with official or authorized business. "Detainees can not see the protesters and are aware of their presence only through media reports," Byington said.
