Doctor Charged With Prescribing Steroid Drugs
Because of their position, doctors have the power to receive any drug he asks for. Recently, a doctor was charged with writing prescriptions for illegal steroid drugs. He was also found to have advised three former Carolina Panthers players how to take the drugs and not get caught during drug testing by the NFL.
Shortt has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include the distribution of steroids and human growth hormones. Shortt has been accused of giving the drugs to former Panthers punter Todd Sauerbrun, tackle Todd Steussie and center Jeff Mitchell.
CBS News reported in March that all three filled prescriptions written by Shortt. Sauerbrun is now with the Denver Broncos. Former Panthers Wesley Walls and Kevin Donnalley were also Shortt patients.
