Via Technologies Develops New Mainboard

VIA Technologies, a Taiwanese manufacturer of integrated circuits, motherboard chipsets, CPUs, and memory, is part of the Formosa Plastics Group. It is the world`s largest independent manufacturer of motherboard chipsets. As a fabless semiconductor company, VIA conducts research and development of its chipsets in-house, then subcontracts the actual manufacturing to a third-party merchant foundry, such as TSMC.

The company has launched its latest development, the VIA EPIA EX-Series Mini-ITX mainboard. This mainboard was developed for consumer electronics. These mainboards are the first of company?s compact platforms to be powered by the high performance 1.5GHz processors and fanless 1.0GHz VIA C7(r) VIA CX700M2 system media processors, as well. The mainboard consumes on average 13.6 watts of electricity for digital media devices, mainly x86-based consumer electronics. The VIA EPIA EX comes complete with full consumer I/O, including composite ports, S-Video, S/PDIF audio, connectors for LVDS and DVI displays, USB2.0 and IEEE1394 peripheral connectivity, SATA II RAID, and 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet, with a Gigabit Ethernet option.

Daniel Wu, Assistant Vice President at the VIA Platform Solutions Division said in a press release: "We see the consumer electronics market increasingly adopting the x86 platform for the extra performance and comprehensive compatibility with all popular media formats, and the fully integrated, off the shelf VIA EPIA EX fills this need perfectly." He added. "Leveraging the power efficient VIA processors and the extensive feature set of the VIA CX700M2 media system processor, the VIA EPIA EX speaks directly to the demands of CE developers."
