Advanced Micro Devices

Advanced Micro Devices, the world`s second-largest producer of processors for PCs and servers, is planning to launch its dual-core Opteron server chip line with a lower power-per-watt configurations. The company, headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, will release the newly configured dual-core Opteron server chip line, with a new price list, February 7, a company spokesperson said. The company added that the new thermal envelopes and pricing will result in a better performance per dollar for its customers.

The new power envelope configurations will include a Opteron 8820 F socket, which secures the processor to the computer`s main circuit board, and the Opteron 2220 F socket, which are both clocked at 2.8GHz, will drop from 125 watts to 103 watts. The reason for this move on Advanced Micro Devices` part is a result of the company`s ongoing battle with Intel, as it tries to steal more of Intel`s x86 server market share. on Advanced Micro Devices gained some additional market share during the last quarter of 2006, though Intel gained back some of the ground it lost in the server market, due to its dual-core Woodcrest and quad-core Clovertown processors.

Intel has been benefiting from the lack of availability of Advanced Micro Devices` quad-core chips, due to the company`s decision to stick to its original timetable for the release of its quad-core processor, code-named Barcelona. The company hopes that the release of Barcelona, some time during the middle of 2007, will attract customers due to its design featuring a four cores fused together on one piece of silicon, as opposed to Intel`s quad-core, which simply ties to Woodcrest processors together on a silicone wafer, will attract more customers.
