Vista Incompatible with iTunes
The release of the new Windows operating system, Vista, has been tainted by an announcement from Apple, which urged iPod and iTunes users not to upgrade their system with the new software. Apple said it knows of some compatibility issues with the Vista software and that it is working on a new update of its own software, due in a few weeks. Microsoft?s new system is the first update in five years that the company has released. The cold water welcome by rival Apple has soured its launch on the market.
iTunes software has gained tremendous popularity over the past years, along with its iPods mobile music players. It is used to synch music on computers with the iPods. The two companies cooperate, each offering its service in a compatible version with the other. Apple posted a notice saying problems may include problematic synchronizing of music and video, contacts and calendars and even failures of iPods that are plugged into a Vista operating computer.
Microsoft, in reponse, did not appreciate the statements from Apple. A spokesman for Microsoft said iTunes users should not necessarily "stop using Vista,? and that no such problems are known to it. Apple?s products are among 5,000 other hardware and software products that were synchronized with the Vista system. The stakes are undoubtedly high, and Vista risks missing out on as many as 90 million potential users who have purchased iPods since 2001, the first year it was released.
