Mobile Music by Mercora

A new service by Mercora, Mercora M, turns mobile phones into portable music players, making available for users to access digital libraries stored on their computer. The downloadable application works on Motorola Q, Samsung SGH-i320, Palm Treo 700w phones, and other Windows Mobile 5.0-certified phones.

The application uses the Ogg/Vorbis open-source media encoder, which provides high-quality audio over 3G networks. Avikk Ghose, director of Business Development, says: "It`s very difficult to get decent quality sound over a small mobile device or 3G network. The music streams at 56-kilobits per second, which is roughly in sound quality equivalent to some MP3 streams."

The service will be free of charge until October 31. It is not clear yet whether U.S. consumers will pay to hear music stored on their computer they already own? Six-months will set subscribers back $29.00, one year, $49.99, and two years, $99.99. Mercora, which claims to have created the world`s largest music catalog library by leveraging peer-to-peer technologies, will demonstrate the mobile music player at DEMOfall 2006 on Wednesday in San Diego.
