Bin Laden Webmaster Caught
On Tuesday, German police arrested an Iraqi man who they believe helped al Qaeda by posting messages and acting as a webmaster for Osama bin Laden and other militant Islamist leaders and groups on the Internet. Known only as Ibrahim R., authorities believe that the 36-year-old suspect broadcast various audio and video messages from al Qaeda chief bin Laden, the late leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and bin Laden?s deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri.
According to the Federal Prosecutor?s Office, in a statement said that Ibrahim R. was able to ?circulate the messages worldwide and thereby support the groups in their terrorist acts and goals.? The webmaster was apprehended at his home near the northwestern town of Osnabrueck. This is the latest in a series of arrests of suspected al Qaeda members and supporters in Germany.
Since a Hamburg-based al Qaeda cell was blamed for the September 11th, 2001 attacks on the United States, Germany has cracked down on Muslim militants living in the country. The nation has also placed a number of radical Islamists on trial. Only time will tell what will come of this recent arrest regarding the webmaster Ibrahim R. If he is truly who the German police believe him to be, they have made a major discovery and breakthrough in the search for terrorist cells in Germany and in Europe as a whole.
