Artist Adds Profession of Webmaster to Resume

David A. Brown is a jack of all trades, and a master of what seems to be many different professions. He is an artist, father, chef, organizer, and now he has added the occupation of webmaster to his long list of talents and skills. He is also a photographer who creates breathtaking abstractions using digital technology, documents events and is the founding director of Spacetaker, a non-profit online cultural center and arts guide which he founded in 2002, and is now the primary webmaster of this site.

So how did this hi-tech job idea roll its way into Brown?s head? ?It started as an online portfolio space when I was at the University of Houston. Carlos Go Boncan, Chet Farmer and I wrote the software, working every Wednesday and a lot of Sundays, over a lot of beer and pizza,? explained Brown. His future wife, Christa, convinced him that the time he was spending, which was a great deal, working on the site would be better spent as part of a real job than a hobby. So Brown became the webmaster and is bringing this art guide to anyone who is interested in viewing it.

The overriding concept of the site, according to Brown is to try and define how much space the arts occupy in the city. He sees his site and his job as webmaster as a service organization which is run by artists for artists and the entities that support them. The site includes portfolios and contact information for area artists, full listings of visual, performance and literary events, and so much more. Now David can be an artist, webmaster, and anything else he desires with the help and success of Spacetaker.
